Brodie Engineering offers a comprehensive range of refurbishment, maintenance, overhaul and repair services to the rail sector. We have expertise ranging from passenger trains to specialist infrastructure vehicles; from bespoke new equipment to obsolescence management on heritage trains.

Brodie Engineering operates from its base in Kilmarnock and provides a mobile service to the rail industry over the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland.

Our in-house Engineering team is available for rapid problem solving. We have experience in developing complex, bespoke, yellow plant; in developing technically challenging repairs for damaged vehicles and in reverse engineering obsolete parts. We have experience of providing engineering consultancy services including development / optimisation of modifications, analysis of applicable standards, assessment of damage / corrosion and writing maintenance or overhaul documents.

The Projects team have decades of rolling stock project management experience across a range of project types (heavy overhauls, re-livery, new build, site support, impact damage).

Our Production staff pride themselves on delivering our products and services in a timely and quality manner. All of our production staff are permanent employees who are trained and competent to undertake the tasks and activities required of them.

Brodie Engineering hold externally audited certification for their Safety, Quality and Environmental procedures and systems.

What We Do

Brodie Engineering undertakes overhaul, design, engineering work for the rail industry. We understand the requirements placed on train operations and work to all Group and industry standards.

Brodie Engineering operate out of their depot in Kilmarnock which has the following capacity and facilities

  • Indoor capacity for up to 14 vehicles
  • Stabling capacity for a further 11 vehicles
  • Pits for underframe maintenance, including an underframe wash area
  • 28 Metre paint booth
  • Variety of jacks for vehicle lifts
  • Traverser for easy movement of vehicle between production roads
  • Fabrication facilities for in house manufacture
  • Water test facility

Meet The Team

Stephen Birnie

Business Relationship Manager

With over 27 years of engineering, technical and management experience within a rail, production and maintenance environment for Scotrail , Stephen has a depth of rail industry knowledge that add real value to the team.  He comes from an electrical background, progressing to engineering shift manger and then technical manager before becoming the depot fleet manager at Corkerhill depot with responsibilities for the health and safety of all staff, leam management, train safety, fleet performance,  commercial performance and customer relationships. Stephen joined Brodie Engineering in April 2018.

Gerry Hilferty

Managing Director

Chartered Engineer,

A railway engineering career professional with 27 years’ experience of rolling stock maintenance and repair. Gerry has experience, whilst working directly for Network Rail, of working with specialist bespoke infrastructure maintenance vehicles and Infrastructure handling equipment.

Founder of Brodie Engineering in 1996.

H.N.D. Electrical & Electronic Engineering and MBA in business management.

36 years’ experience in the Rail Industry in a variety of management roles, including Depot/ Production management and Engineering Management.  Experienced of management in both Private and Public Rail sectors.

Barbara McIntyre

Engineering & Projects Manager

Chartered Engineer with First Class MEng degree in Product Design Engineering.

Barbara joined Brodie Engineering in 2015 with 12 years’ experience in engineering and manufacturing. Barbara started her career designing buses with Alexander Dennis before moving to BAE Systems in 2005 where she performed a variety of roles including leading a team of engineers to design Power & Propulsion systems for cutting edge warships. 

Barbara brings additional process and project experience to Brodie Engineering.

Douglas Gibson

General Manager

20 years rail experience, formerly a team leader in coach building with Hunslet-Barclay, Dougie has developed a detailed understanding of all trades associated with rail engineering manufacture, refurbishment and installation.

He joined Brodie Engineering in 2004 and has developed into the role of Production Manager. Dougie has a wide range of rail vehicle experience.

Matthew Walker

Susan Scott

HR Manager

Susan is an HR professional (Chartered MCIPD) holding a PG Diploma in Human Resource Management.

She joined Brodie Engineering in Jan 2014 bringing over 20 years’ generalist HR experience from working in the Oil & Gas sector for BP (LPG) at a commercial level.  As part of their leadership team she was responsible for delivering a wide range of HR projects, change management and organisational transformations, as well as leading all employee communication and engagement activities before taking up this new challenge in the rail industry.

Cameron Gibson

Compliance Manager, QHSE.

Cameron is a highly professional QHSE Manager with 23 years’ experience within the rail industry working to Rail Group Standards.  He holds both NEBOSH and IOSH certification for Health & Safety, Control of workplace hazards and risk assessment. 

He is also a SQA qualified assessor and Internal Auditor (QCS) with considerable experience in setting up of Quality Management Systems to ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001 standard, developing effective quality control processes  and on-going compliance and auditing.

John McGougan

Materials Manager

Early career in electronics - 14 years in various Warehouse and Logistics Management roles responsible for inventory management, warehousing and on time delivery of materials.

10 years rail experience with Hunslet Barclay, Brush Barclay and latterly Wabtec Rail Scotland initially as Stores and Material handling supervisor then developed through a series of management roles including Material and Systems, Materials and Maintenance, Production Control and Materials Manager.

Gained further experience of inventory management, procurement, stores and production control in support of production and ultimately the customer. Joined Brodie Engineering in 2011.
