Engineering Summer Placement at Brodie Engineering
20/08/2019
This summer, Brodie Engineering offered a Summer Placement to a current Mechanical Engineering student at The University of Edinburgh. Anushka worked with us as part of the engineering team, gaining valuable insight into different aspects of what the team does on a daily bases. Below, you can read about everything Anushka got up to this summer and what she had to say about her experience!
"When I joined the engineering team at Brodie Engineering, I was welcomed into a positive and creative environment in which I was given the opportunity to explore many different aspects of the projects that Brodie Engineering takes on.
My main goal for the summer placement was to write some general work procedures for processes that are carried out in Brodie Engineering regularly. This would allow for a library to be created for work procedures that could be used in multiple different projects. This task involved watching the procedures being carried out and taking pictures which were then included in the work procedures that I wrote. In addition to this, I was also able to spend some time using both 2D and 3D CAD to aid some of the projects. This gave me very useful insight into the creation of engineering drawings and the standards that they must meet, as well as allowing me to develop further skills in 3D modelling. I was also able to spend some time assisting in other tasks, such as preparing bills of materials for projects, which broadened my understanding of the process of materials purchasing. Overall, I was given the opportunity to explore many different aspects of the work that Brodie Engineering does and what the different roles in the company entail.
My experience working at Brodie Engineering was overwhelmingly positive. The team put a lot of consideration to the tasks that they gave me to ensure that I was able to get the most out of my time there. Doing a placement with Brodie Engineering really allowed me to develop my practical skills and understanding of my engineering degree. The work environment is very social and friendly, and I was given the opportunity to get to know the people I was working with. Further, I felt comfortable asking questions and reaching out for help. Thanks to my summer placement, I have gained invaluable experience which helps to supplement the things that I am studying at University and gives me an insight into the reality of a career in engineering."
